Our talented Heads of Kitchen and Catering Assistants cook, craft and serve over 1.8 million school meals in Southampton each year. These passionate school kitchen professionals have been serving nutritious school meals for nearly 20 years, and each year, we hold an awards evening to celebrate their hard work and say thank you to those who have gone the extra mile.

Catering Assistant of the Year – Sponsored by Green Gourmet
Winner: Christine Bartlett at Regents Park Community College
Christine was awarded Catering Assistant of the Year due to her first-class customer service to pupils at her school. Always smiling and willing to take on new challenges, the dedication and effort she puts into supporting her head of kitchen was recognised. Christine is always confident and keeps her team smiling!
Assistant Cook of the Year – Sponsored by Harvest Fine Foods
Winner: Amanda Garvey at Bassett Green Primary School
Amanda is a warm and unassuming caterer, and her hard work was celebrated at our staff awards evening. Her peaceful nature doesn’t mean that we wouldn’t notice her effort and strengths in the kitchen. Working through challenging times, her continuous excellence was recognised, and she holds together the foundations of excellent school meal service.
Catering Manager of the Year – Sponsored by Bidfood
Winner: Sue Powell at Springhill Primary School
Sue was awarded this year’s Kitchen Manager Award as she has been a proactive member of City Catering Southampton kitchen teams for many years, having worked in both Primary and Secondary school environments. She runs a tight ship which has resulted in one of the highest kitchen audit scores and she has helped out in times of need at several schools. Sue is a valuable member of the Food Development Group and hers was the nominated kitchen to be independently assessed by the Food for Life Inspector last year.
Un-Sung heroes – Sponsored by Bidfood
Our Un-sung heroes awards recognise to members of staff who go above and beyond in their day to day jobs. These stars were celebrated for their continuous effort and dedication to their schools.
Winner: Georgina Webb at St Denys Primary School
Working closely with the headteacher to support the curriculum with theme day menus, Georgina has successfully implemented a new initiative of feeding reception children in their classrooms.
Winner: Julie Hoskin at Valentine Primary School
Supporting our charitable efforts with the Holiday Hunger club which helps families who need extra food and support during the holidays, Julie is fantastic caterer who has worked through tough times and has risen to every challenge.
Winner: Sandra Jackson at Polygon School
When our next winner moved to her new school, from day one she was faced with challenges. Working on her own, Sandra has won the respect of the staff, children and headteacher.
Teams of the Year – Sponsored by Premier Foods
Winner: Mansbridge Primary School
Mansbridge Primary’s kitchen team’s focus and enthusiasm were celebrated at the awards ceremony. Passionate about their jobs, this team has gained the support of the school and their headteacher. The positive attitude of this kitchen makes visiting the school an absolute joy.
Winner: St Patricks Catholic Primary School
St Patricks Catholic Primary School team have transformed the meal service at their school. They have built up good relationships with pupils and teachers, and they have supported school initiatives to increase pupil meal numbers. With excellent audit results, one comment about this school is that the kitchen is spotless!
Winner: Civic Team
Our final award for Team of the Year goes to the Civic Team who were recognised for a year of super work. Significant financial savings were achieved during the year, and despite the challenges and cost savings, the standard of food and the level of customer services has never been less than excellent. This team’s dedication and expertise are much appreciated.
Kitchen Management Award – Sponsored by HFP Foods
Winner: Tracy Cole at Banister Primary School
Our Kitchen Management Award goes to an excellent cook who has achieved one of the highest audit scores of the year. Through sheer hard work and determination, Tracy has built positive relations with the school and is a pleasure to work with.
